Tips on How to Spot a Craigslist Scam

Author Update (1/27/10) – This post has become a log of the messages people receive from craigslist scammers. Make sure to read through the comments at the bottom and post other scammer emails you have received.

Yesterday I began searching on craigslist for a place in DC to re-locate to.  I am pretty indifferent of specific location but rent price is very important.  I saw a listing for a $1200 “very nice” condo in the heart of Georgetown.  For you that know the area… look at the location they listed.

I bit.  I sent them an email saying i was interested and if that price was really possible.  I should have known “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”  This is the response i got:

Let me be clear.  This is a scam. There are hundreds of these types of scams that happen every day to uninformed people all over the country.  This was the first one that I actually started to believe because these people are good at exploiting the needs of others and general sense of unfounded trust that exists on the internet.

Here are some tips to help you identify a Craigslist scam..

Watch for unusual or odd use of language.  Most of the time these scammers are overseas and do not have a grip on our language.

Punctuation: Notice in the above paragraph there are not enough spaces after the periods.  Some of them do not have any space at all.  This isnt a stab at people who are grammatically challenged but in all of the scams I have encountered while using craigslist, this is one of the common denominators.

Grammar or word choice:  Most of these con artists use thesauruses and translators to translate their fake emails and messages from their native language into our own.  For anyone who’s studied foreign language you know that english is one of the most unsual and difficult to learn.  Our grammatical structures and sentence syntax is unlike other language and it does not translate well to other languages and vice versa.  These automated translaters do their best but usually you end up with things like “How you money make?  I you pay now.”  It’s not dyslexia, it’s degenerates.

Tone:  Americans are a very informal people, as you know.  Sit up in your chair please remove your cocked baseball cap, Johnny.  A lot of scammers end up coming off very direct and abrupt.  It’s partially the language barrier but also a cultural difference.  Our language allows for very “feeler” and wishy-washy language that doesn’t typically appear in these emails.  It also has to do with getting straight to the point because scamming is a numbers game.  If you don’t bite on their bottom line, the’ll find someone else who does.

Selling from afar:  A lot of these scams mention selling a product from a distance.  Craigslist isn’t meant for this but there are times when it may be appropriate.  Usually they create an obstacle as to why they can’t meet you in person, which can also be a pull factor if you’re skeptical of meeting people on craigslist in the first place.  And when you can’t meet in person to exchange cash you have to resort to…

Wiring Money:  This is probably the most common denominator between all craigslist scams.  They don’t want to use PayPal or any type of respected and regulated service.  They only resort to money wiring because its one-time, non-traceable and non-refundable.

Examine the e-mail address:  this is a warning sign.  most people choose an e-mail address that is unique to them and often times has something personal about them.  The email address Anna used was: goaraek@hotmail.com.  You better believe that was auto-generated by a piece of software in order to save time.  Besides, who uses hotmail anymore?  anyone?

But honestly after all of that the most important thing that you can remember when trying to protect yourself against a craigslist or other internet scam is remember this:  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  A $1200, 2 bedroom apartment, half a block from the georgetown water front and half a block from M street does not exist and never will.  I would believe that price per square foot per month.

Use the internet, which is constantly at your fingertips these days, to protect yourself against internet fraud.  For rentals and apartments, use Google Maps with street view to check if the location matches pictures and descriptions that are given by the “landlord.”  Google unusual wording in the advertisement to see if other people have reported the same ad.  Like I said it’s a numbers game with scammers they dont care if someone figures it out, they’re betting on those that don’t.  Besides, teachers have been using it for years now to find kids plagiarizing essays from the internet.  Google is your best friend.

Please be careful when you’re out there, it’s a jungle.

    I started the official procedure and eBay will notify you about this matter via email( please check your email address including your bulk/junk folder and let me know if it’s there….if you will not receive the email in 2 hours max please email me asap).You’ll also receive important guidelines plus instructions from them in 2 hours max(please go through them exactly). Now you must send them the money in the next 24 hours. I used before eBay and I used Western for the money transfer. I suppose that you’ll use the same service. If so, I can tell you two secrets about Western:
    1. I filled my phone number on the transfer form and I can tell you that I’ve been called by them every day for commercial purposes until I had to change my phone number.After that I filled a WRONG phone # on the form and resolved this issue(I changed my last digit of my phone number).
    2. It’s better to tell to the Western agent that you send the money to a relative so the transfer will be approved in 15 min and you’ll have to pay 90-110$-Western fee(the transfers for friends or
    relatives are approved in 15 min, it’s cheaper…). If you tell them that you are sending the money to a commercial agent the transfer can take up to 20 hours until will be approved and maybe you’ll be unable to complete the transaction in time, they will also charge you with an extra fee of 70-80$( totally about 190$).

  17. A new trend in Chicago, at least is to make you fill out a credit report at a listing of their choice, without giving you their contact info or the location of the condo. This is the 3rd apartment listed in such a manner. The previous two were listed by 2 different individuals but all have the same price $760/month, and conditions and linked credit check website that I am sure is a re-direct and not really legit. I have no problem bringing a credit report on myself, but the previous one was worded, as is this one, that if you don’t go to this web site first she will not reveal the location of the apartment.

  22. First of all, who in their right mind would fall for scams like the examples given above??? It doesn’t take a genuis to figure out if you are being scammed or if it’s a legitimate ad. Sorry, but even a box of rocks has more common sense than that. Seriously people, use your brain!!! I got an email from a scammer last week who claimed to have a very nice townhouse for rent. This person then proceeded to tell me his life story about how he had to move to AFRICA to care for a sick relative and that’s why the rent is so cheap. THEN……….well, you guys know the rest lol Asking me to fill out an application that had the most outrageous questions! Then saying he would send the keys to the residence after recieving a deposit. I was like “yeah ok whatever, idiot!” I said “do you honestly think people will fall for that crap?” And for those of you who do actually fall for it, well, you kind of asked for it so it’s your own fault.

  23. So really the only way to tell if it is a scam is if they ask for a money transfer not through PayPal or other credible money exchangers. Beyond that nothing else you posted is a sure sign of a scam. Probably the only thing I have bought on Craigslist are things that we’re “too good to be true”. People needing money fast. Not having room for or use for. And honestly people who I don’t know if they knew what they had.

  27. Recently, I saw an ad on Craigslist saying that someone needed somebody to take their kids to school and back home for four days. I’m pretty sure it’s a scam. Why would anyone hire somebody they don’t know to take their kids to school and back? Why can’t they ask a family member or friend? I wouldn’t hire someone I didn’t know to take my kids to school. It doesn’t make sense. What if the person turned out to be a creep who had the intention to hurt the kids? There’s bad people out there and they don’t look like the bad guys we see in movies all the time.

  32. I went through w/ filling my info because I didn’t know it was a scam until researching and he went all the way in sending a photo of him and his son as well as pics of the place in order to gain my trust. Once my application has been “approved” he emailed me with:

    Congratulations!!! Your application has been approved. I really appreciate your willingness in renting my place and i promise you that you will never regret taking my place. I have taken time to go over your application form and i want you to know that it has been processed and you have been approved.

    The total cost for you to move into the apartment is $1500. $900 for first month rent and $600 for the damage deposit which is refundable at the end of your stay in the apartment.

    Also i will like you to kindly provide me with one or couple of your picture so as for me to have an idea how you look like (no offense). I’m willing to keep this as a means of recognition and also to put a face to your name. I have also attached a recent picture of me and my son so you can also know how we look like.

    Below are the content of the documents i will be sending to you once payment is confirmed.

    Of course I googled him and his address. His address led to a hostel in Malaysia and I’m thinking if he’s staying there for 4 years he wouldve gotten a place there and not a hostel.. Also the fact that he didnt give me the suite number and only the building address is suspicious. I know that something was up when he strongly asked for Western Union (when I suggested something else that’s more safer/regulated). PEOPLE PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR THESE SCAMS. Sure it may sound appealing but you can’t trust anyone!
